DHS conducted over 1.2 million expulsions, removals and returns in first half of fiscal year 2023
During the first half of Fiscal Year (FY) 2023, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) increased removals and returns to 225,483, up from 170,896 over the same period in Fiscal Year (FY) 2022. That number includes nearly 66,000 removals, 48,381 of which were conducted through U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) removal flights. Those numbers are in addition to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) total southwest land border Title 42 expulsions, which reached 1,079,507 in that same timeframe.
DHS has made videos available to the public and the media including b-roll footage of removal flights, a public service announcement, and testimonials from migrants who were removed.

With the end of the Title 42 public health Order, DHS will continue to enforce U.S. immigration laws with the return to expedited removal proceedings under Title 8 authorities, which carry stricter consequences like at least a five-year ban on reentry and potential criminal prosecution for unlawful reentry. Those with a final removal order will be promptly removed, thanks in part to new agreements with multiple countries to accept more return flights. Noncitizens should use existing lawful pathways rather than attempt to cross the border illegally between ports of entry.
