Washington Matthew R. Stohler has been named special agent in charge (SAIC) of the U.S. Secret Service Washington Field Office. Mr. Stohler was most recently appointed in May 2020 as the deputy assistant director of the Office of Human Resources.
In his role as deputy assistant director, Stohlers responsibilities included recruitment and talent acquisition, hiring and employee onboarding, employee retention programs, benefits and payroll administration, senior executive resources management, human capital business and IT solutions, policy and accountability, talent management, employee relations, safety and environmental programs, medical evaluations, fitness for duty and workforce planning and modeling.
Prior to his role with the Office of Human Resources, Mr. Stohler served as the special agent in charge with the Office of the Chief Financial Officer where he provided guidance and executive level support to the three subordinate divisions responsible for the planning, programming, budgeting, execution and evaluation of the agency budget exceeding $2.3 billion. He also directly supervised a leadership team responsibility for long-term special projects and directed all strategic communications to operational directorates improving efficiency and ensuring mission readiness.
Mr. Stohler also served as the assistant special agent in charge of the Office of Human Resources where he coordinated efforts across the Department of Homeland Security, the Office of Personnel Management and Congress for critical human resources initiatives, including additional hiring authorities, recruitment and retention initiatives and employee pay enhancements.
As the assistant to the special agent in charge of the Secret Services Cincinnati Field Office, Mr. Stohler provided oversight and strategic guidance for all criminal investigations, protective intelligence investigations, talent acquisition and onboarding, and protection activities. During this time, Mr. Stohler led the Southern District of Ohio Financial and Electronic Crimes Task Forces (later combined and named one of the agencys local Cyber Fraud Task Forces) in combating transnational cyber-enabled crime through technological training and critical partnerships with community business leaders, academic, and federal, state and local law enforcement. While in Cincinnati, Stohler entered the Senior Executive Service Candidate Development Program and served as the chief of staff to the sheriff of the Hamilton County Sheriffs Office in Cincinnati.
Mr. Stohler began his Secret Service career as a special agent with the Phoenix Field Office, conducting criminal investigations and serving as a network intrusion specialist. Subsequent assignments included service on the Dignitary Protective Division and the Presidential Protective Division for President Barack Obama.
A native of Ridgewood, New Jersey, Mr. Stohler grew up in Mesa, Arizona, and holds a Master of Arts degree in forensic psychology from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. His undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona.
