The following press release was published by the U.S. Secret Service on March 7, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

(Fairview Heights, IL) A Secret Service child pornography investigation concluded with the

imposition of a lengthy prison sentence for a Smithton, Il, man.

Kyle W. Oberg, was sentenced March 3, 2017, on two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor

and one count of possession of visual depictions of prepubescent minors engaged in sexually

explicit conduct. Oberg was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment which is to be followed by a

lifetime term of supervised probation. Oberg was also fined $200 on each count, for a total fine

of $600, and ordered to pay a $300 special assessment.

Child sexual exploitation is an alarming problem, said Bill Shink, Resident Agent in Charge of

the Secret Service Springfield Resident Office. This case demonstrates the effectiveness of

multijurisdictional partnerships and the commitment of the Secret Service to identify and

prosecute these predators.

The Secret Service Springfield Resident Office maintains a multi-agency, electronic crimes

working group, the Southern Illinois Cyber Crime Unit (SICCU), in Fairview Heights, IL.

The U.S. Attorneys Office and the Smithton Police Department requested the assistance of the

U.S. Secret Service and the SICCU in conducting this investigation into the alleged production of

child pornography by Kyle W. Oberg.

A State of Illinois Search Warrant was executed on Obergs residence, resulting in the seizure of

various electronic items. A forensic examination of the seized items was later conducted,

pursuant to a U.S. District Court Search Warrant, by a deputized Special Federal Officer of the

SICCU. This examination disclosed 337 pornographic images of a young girl. The investigation

by the Secret Service determined 11 of the subject images were produced at Obergs residence.

Oberg was indicted by the U.S. District Court Grand Jury, East St. Louis, IL, for Production of

Child Pornography and Possession of Child Pornography, violations of 18 U.S.C. 2251 and

2252. As a result, an arrest warrant was issued for Oberg. Pursuant to this arrest warrant, Oberg

was located and arrested by agents of the Secret Service.
