(Newark, N.J.) A Secret Service investigation into an organized cybercrime ring responsible
for the theft of $9 million concluded with a lengthy prison sentence for a Filipino national.
Angelo Virtucio, a/k/a ZaiR, a/k/a ZaiRe, a/k/a Omega, a/k/a Omega10, was sentenced
today on one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud. Virtucio was sentenced to 63 months
imprisonment which will be followed by two years of supervised release.
The Secret Service is committed to investigating these offenses said Mark McKevitt, Special
Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service, Newark Field Office. Fraudulent schemes such as
this continue to evolve and have a significant impact on commerce. I am grateful for the
tremendous work conducted by the agents of the Newark Field Office, and the U.S. Attorneys
Office, District of New Jersey. Our well established partnership has allowed us to focus resources
and respond quickly to uncover and prosecute this type of criminal activity.
Virtucio utilized computer hacking, ATM skimming operations and other high-tech schemes to
monetize millions of dollars from stolen credit and debit card data. He recruited a global network
of criminals to conduct fraudulent financial transactions.
Virtucio previously plead guilty before U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton to an
information charging him with one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud. He was arrested
in the Southern District of Florida on Jan. 29, 2015 and was extradited to the District of New
Jersey on Feb. 11, 2015.
Acting U.S. Attorney Fitzpatrick credited the special agents of the U.S. Secret Service, Newark
Field Office.
